WORCESTER, MA – Theresa Kelley '13 (Los Angeles, CA) struck out 10 batters and allowed only one earned run in six innings of work, but it wasn't enough as the Amherst College softball team dropped to 7-7 on the season with a 2-1 setback at WPI.
The hosts got on the board in the first inning when Nicole McDonough crossed home plate after reaching on a single and progressing on the base paths following an Amherst miscue. Katrina Boynton drove in the game-winning run with a single in the fourth inning to help the Engineers improve to 14-7.
Amherst got its run in the second inning to tie the game at 1-1. Carolyn Miller (Leominster, MA) singled, stole second and made it to third on an error, allowing Annemarie Iker '12 (Mill Valley, CA) to single up the middle for the Jeffs' lone RBI.
Allie Hardy (5-1) picked up her second win as many days as she scattered five hits over five innings and gave up an unearned run. Erin Flaherty threw two scoreless innings of relief for her first save of the season.
Kelley (4-5) went the distance and allowed only four hits for Amherst, walking one batter to go along with her 10 strikeouts. Iker finished the game 2-for-3 with one RBI for the Lord Jeffs.
Both teams are scheduled to return to action this Friday with conference home contests. Weather permitting, Amherst will host Hamilton at 5 p.m.
