HARTFORD, CT – The Amherst College softball team dropped to 7-6 on the season with a pair of non-conference losses to Trinity College Monday afternoon. The Lord Jeffs suffered a 9-2 setback in the first game and were dealt a 9-1 loss in the five-inning nightcap.

First-year catcher Olivia Berry homered in each game, finishing 4-for-5 with three runs and six RBIs to lead the Bantams to the doubleheader sweep. Trinity improves to 9-5 and extends its winning streak to four games with its fifth and sixth consecutive victories over the Lord Jeffs.

In the opener, Trinity broke open a 2-2 game in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore Caroline Blanchard scored the go-ahead run on a two-RBI double by classmate Amelia Mostovoy. Berry added her first homer of the day to give Trinity five runs in the inning, and the Bantams added two insurance runs in the sixth.

Amherst had taken a 2-0 lead in the fourth frame on a bases-loaded walk by senior tri-captain Jillian Masi (Stamford, CT) and a sacrifice fly, but Trinity tied it in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double by Berry.

Trinity junior Lindsay Gibbons earned the win in the circle with three innings of scoreless relief. Theresa Kelley '13 (Los Angeles, CA) suffered the loss by allowing seven runs—only one earned—in the first 4.2 innings, striking out seven batters and walking only two. Amherst sophomore Reilly Horan (Darien, CT) was 3-for-3 at the plate, while Blanchard went 3-for-4 with two runs, and Mostovoy finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.

The Bantams jumped all over Amherst in the second game with runs in all but the first inning, ending it early with four runs in the fifth to enact the mercy rule at 9-1. Sophomore Kerry McCarthy belted a two-run double and later scored during the game-ending Bantam rally.

Trinity senior Kristen Anderson improved to 4-2 with a two-hitter, while McCarthy finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, and rookie Abby Ostrom hit her first collegiate home run. Kaitlin Silkowitz '14 (Scarsdale, NY) and Carolyn Miller '14 (Leominster, MA) each had a hit for Amherst, while Arielle Doering '14 (Branchburg, NJ) took the loss after allowing four runs in two innings.
