Homers by Kelley, Horan Lead Amherst to 5-2 Win at WNEC

SPRINGFIELD, MA – Sophomores Theresa Kelley (Los Angeles, CA) and Reilly Horan (Darien, CT) used the long ball to combine for four hits and four RBIs, as the Amherst College softball team improved to 7-4 on the season with a 5-2 win at Western New England College Friday afternoon.

Amherst went ahead early on a lead-off home run to left field by Kelley, marking her second long ball of the season. Annemarie Iker '12 (Mill Valley, CA) soon made it a 2-0 game by bringing home Carolyn Miller '14 (Leominster, MA) on a double to right field.

The Lord Jeffs increased their advantage to 5-0 on a three-run homer by Horan in the top of the second inning. The clutch hit came with two outs, capitalizing on the lone error of the game for the Golden Bears.

Amherst would be held scoreless the rest of the way, but the five early runs would be all Kelley needed to pick up the win. Kelley improved to 4-3 by striking out nine batters and holding the Golden Bears to only three hits in seven innings. Jillian Masi '11 (Stamford, CT) went 2-for-3 and scored a run to round out Amherst's top performers.

Western New England (3-8) battled back in the bottom half of the fourth, as sophomore shortstop Jeana Longo belted a two-run triple to right field to score junior catcher Rachel Wyrwa and senior designated player Elyse Gauvin on the play.

The Lord Jeffs will return to action Monday, Mar. 28, when they head to Trinity College for a non-conference doubleheader with the Bantams. The first game is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
