WINTER HAVEN, FL – The Amherst College baseball team closed its spring break trip with a 14-12 loss to Grinnell College at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Lord Jeffs (6-4) will return to action Wednesday, Mar. 23, when they travel to Westfield State University.
Grinnell scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning and never relinquished the lead. The Jeffs got on the board in the third when an RBI-double by Brian Merrigan '11 (Holbrook, MA) and an RBI-single from Dan Pillitteri '13 (Ramsey, NJ) made it a 3-2 game, but Grinnell answered with four runs in the top of the fourth.
Bob Cook '13 (Winnetka, IL) led the way for Amherst by going 3-for-5 with a walk and three RBIs, driving in two runs with a triple in the fourth inning. Amherst scored six runs in the final three frames—including a four-run eighth—but could not overcome the large deficit. Fred Shepard '14 (Amherst, MA) took the loss after pitching the first four innings.
