Amherst Comes from Behind to Beat Southern Maine, 13-7

AUBURNDALE, FL – The Amherst College baseball team improved to 6-3 with a 13-7, come-from-behind win over the University of Southern Maine Saturday afternoon at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. 

Southern Maine held a 1-0 lead after the first inning, but Amherst tied things up with a run of its own in the bottom of the second. The Huskies went back ahead by one in the fourth, but the Jeffs again pushed back with a pair of runs to take a 3-2 lead. 

After the Huskies put up four runs in the top of the fifth, Amherst scored in four consecutive innings to take a commanding lead, with a six-run seventh inning proving to be the difference maker. Kevin Heller '12 (Brooklyn, NY) ignited the rally in the seventh with a leadoff double, as seven consecutive Lord Jeffs reached base safely. Amherst held a 12-6 lead after the inning, with Nolan Stewart '13 (New Canaan, CT), Scott Shaffer '11 (Boulder, CO) and Alex Hero '14 (New York, NY) providing RBI-singles. 

The Huskies got one back in the top of the eighth, but Amherst responded with a run of its own in the bottom half of the frame when Stewart tripled and scored on a Shaffer RBI-single. Stewart and Shaffer each went 3-for-5, while Bob Cook '13 (Winnetka, IL) was 3-for-3 with two sacrifice flies and Mike Samela '12 (Westport, CT) finished at 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored. 

Cam Windham '14 (Washington, DC) picked up the win for Amherst by pitching the final 3.2 innings.
