Box Score 2 LAKE WALES, FL – The Amherst College baseball team suffered a 7-3 loss to Worcester State University Sunday afternoon but rallied to win the nightcap, 6-3. The Lord Jeffs (2-1) will continue the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational when they take on Babson College Monday at 1 p.m. at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Fla.
Serving as the home team in Sunday's second game, Amherst scored two runs in the first inning and never surrendered the lead. Thomas Wheeler '12 (Minnetonka, MN) and Scott Shaffer '11 (Boulder, CO) combined for three RBIs and each went 2-for-3 to lead the offense, while Kevin Heller '12 (Brooklyn, NY) and Alex Hero '14 (New York, NY) drove in one run apiece.
Making his first collegiate start, Dylan Driscoll '14 (Mount Airy, MD) picked up the win (1-0) for Amherst by tossing the first 4.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits and three walks to go along with three strikeouts. Adam Medoff '13 (San Francisco, CA) picked up the save (1) by giving up only one earned run in 2.2 innings of relief. Medoff allowed four hits, walked two and hit two batters.
In the nightcap, Bob Cook '13 (Winnetka, IL) led off the bottom of the first by doubling to right center and would come around to score on a single by Heller. Heller was gunned down at second while trying to stretch his single into a double, but it allowed Brian Merrigan '11 (Holbrook, MA) to come home on the throw.
The Jeffs added a run in the third when Wheeler singled up the middle to bring around Dan Pillitteri '13 (Ramsey, NJ), who led off the inning by singling down the left field line.
All three of Amherst's runs in the fifth inning came with two outs. Merrigan was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch, allowing Hero to pick up an RBI on a single through the middle of the infield. Wheeler followed with an RBI-double to left center, and Shaffer capped the scoring when he drove in Wheeler with a single to left center.
All three of Amherst's runs in the first game came in the top of the fourth inning, but the Lord Jeffs squandered their 3-1 lead by surrendering three runs in the bottom of the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth. Amherst's runs were produced by a Nolan Stewart '13 (New Canaan, CT) RBI-single up the middle, a Merrigan sacrifice fly, and a Pillitteri RBI-single through the left side of the infield.
Dylan Joyce '12 (South Orange, NJ) took the loss (0-1) by giving up six earned runs on eight hits in five innings of work, striking out three and walking two. Jeff Keenan '11 (West Hartford, CT) allowed one unearned run in an inning of relief.
