Jeffs Score 10 Unanswered Goals in Win Over Williams

AMHERST, MA – The seventh-ranked Amherst College women's ice hockey team fell into an early 1-0 hole against archrival Williams College, but the Lord Jeffs dominated the final two periods and pulled away for an impressive 10-1 win over the Ephs Friday evening at Orr Rink.

Amherst (14-5-2, 12-2-1 NESCAC) held a 2-1 lead after out-shooting Williams (4-12-1, 3-9-1) by a slim 10-8 margin in the opening period, but the Lord Jeffs came alive and took advantage of their power play opportunities to break the game open with four goals in the second and another four in the third. Five players recorded three points apiece for the Jeffs, who have now won nine straight in the rivalry and will host the Ephs again tomorrow at 3 p.m.

The Ephs shocked the home fans by taking a 1-0 lead 40 seconds into the game when first-year Cristina Bravi was in the right place at the right time, streaking in from behind the net and pouncing on a rebound to beat Amherst goalie Sinead Murphy '12 (Rochester, MN). Ally Ensore picked up the assist on Bravi's rebound, which marked only the sixth first-period goal the Jeffs have allowed all year.

Amherst would carry a 2-1 lead into the first intermission thanks to goals from Stephanie Clegg '12 (Woburn, MA) and Kaitlyn McInnis '13 (Franklin, MA). With the Jeffs on the power play, Clegg tied things up at 1-1 9:43 into the frame when she received a pass from behind the net and snuck a shot past Williams goalie Rachel Nguyen '14. With 3:13 to go McInnis recorded an unassisted goal to give the hosts a lead they would not relinquish.

The Jeffs put only two more shots on goal than did Williams in the first 20 minutes, but the second period was dominated by Amherst. McInnis got things going when she scored on a breakaway at the 4:21 mark, slipping the puck between Nguyen's legs to make it a 3-1 game.

Amherst would add three power-play goals in the second period to carry a 6-1 lead into the second intermission. Geneva Lloyd '13 (Calgary, Alberta) bumped the lead to 4-1 7:00 into the frame, with Barrett McBride '14 (Glenview, IL) adding on at 17:52 and Courtney Hanlon '11 (Fullerton, CA) making it 6-1 at 19:00.

The Jeffs scored three times in the opening five minutes of the third period, with Ellen Swiontkowski '12 (Minnetonka, MN) kicking things off only 35 seconds in. Megan Doyen '13 (Ortonville, MI) then scored at 1:30 and again at 4:57, before McBride wrapped things up by making it a 10-1 game with 2:48 remaining in regulation.

The hosts held a 36-15 advantage in shots, as Murphy made 14 saves to improve to 4-1-1 on the season. Nguyen stopped 22 shots in the first 40 minutes before being relieved by Catherine Tremble, who made four stops in the third period.

With a goal and two assists against the Ephs, Hanlon moved into sole possession of fourth place on Amherst's all-time points list. With 61 goals and 54 assists in her career, Hanlon is one of only six members of the program's 100-point club.
