AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College squash teams closed out the 2011 portion of their schedules with wins over Northeastern University, while the men's team added a 9-0 victory over MIT Saturday morning.
The 15th-ranked Amherst women and the 22nd-ranked men each improved to 3-1 on the season. The Lord Jeffs did not surrender a single game to the Northeastern women, with three Amherst players winning by default and three others allowing only two points in all. Senior tri-captain Kate Savage was involved in the closest match, defeating Carly Evans at number two by a score of 11-4, 11-5, 11-2.
Six Amherst men's players did not lose a game to Northeastern, but the matches were much more competitive than the final scores indicated. First-year Alex Southmayd dropped his first game at number three but rallied for a 3-1 win, with Max Kardon '15 and Peter Mack '15 also earning 3-1 victories at numbers five and nine, respectively. First-year Jake Albert won a hard-fought first game, 17-15, before comfortably taking the remaining two at number eight.
The Lord Jeff men had similar results against MIT, winning eight of their matches by a 3-0 score despite being tested by the Engineers. Rodrigo Miranda '14 came out on the winning end of a back-and-forth match at number seven, as he took the first, third and fifth games. Mack was particularly impressive in the No. 9 matchup, cruising to a win of 11-0, 11-8, 11-0.
The Lord Jeffs will not return to action until Sunday, Jan. 8, when they host Yale University.
