AMHERST, Mass. - Four different Lord Jeffs scored a goal as the seventh-ranked Amherst women's hockey team improved to 2-0-0 (2-0-0 NESCAC) with a 4-1 win over conference rival Hamilton at Orr Rink. Closing out the second leg of a season-opening home-and-home series with the Continentals, the Lord Jeffs wrapped up their first weekend of play with a 9-1 scoring margin.
Tori Salmon '15 (Batavia, N.Y.), Melissa Martin '15 (Berkley, Mass.), Ellen Swiontkowski '12 (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Josie Fisher '12 (Norwich, Vt.) all tallied goals for Amherst, with Fisher, Kaitlyn McInnis '13 (Franklin, Mass.), Ashley Salerno '14 (Brunswick, Maine) and Geneva Lloyd '13 (Calgary, Alberta) each recording an assist.
The Lord Jeffs put 11 shots on goal in a scoreless first before peppering the Hamilton net with 22 shots en route to a three-goal second period. Amherst tacked on another score in the third, registering 14 more shots on goal to finish the game with a decisive 47-13 shooting edge. Hamilton finished 0-for-5 on the power play while the Jeffs went 1-for-8.
Looking for the game's first goal just over three minutes into the second, Fisher caused a turnover in front of the Continental net before slotting a pass to Salmon. After goalkeeper Rebecca Hazlett '13 made the initial stop, Salmon put in her own rebound to stake Amherst to a 1-0 lead.
Earning their sixth power play opportunity of the day after a tripping penalty at 7:45, the Lord Jeffs again broke through, extending their cushion to two on the man-up advantage. Playing a pass to the point, McInnis found Martin, who one-timed a shot into the Hamilton net for the second time in as many days.
Short-handed with less than five minutes to go in the second, Swiontkowski stole the puck behind the Hamilton net before connecting on a wrap-around goal to up the Amherst lead to 3-0 entering the final period.
Hoping to climb back into the game, the Continentals got on the board just 10 seconds into the third when Stephanie Lang '14 scored on an Ingrid Kelly '15 assist but Fisher responded just 9:43 later, lifting a shot over Hazlett's shoulder for the Jeffs' fourth tally.
Stuart finished with 12 saves in the win, while Hazlett made 43 stops in the loss.
Amherst returns to action on Sat. Nov. 26-27 at the Panther/Cardinal Classic hosted by No. 4 Plattsburgh.
