Jumping out to an early lead, Amherst broke into the scoring column at 13:02 when Sarah Duffy '14 (Fairfield, Conn.) crossed the ball into the box from the right corner, finding an unmarked Mel Stier '15 (Deerfield, Mass.), who sent the volley into the net to stake Amherst to a 1-0 lead.
Still trailing by a score in the 54th minute, Ellery Gould '12 received a pass from Nicole Fossi '13 before crossing into the 18 and blasting a shot to the lower right corner to pull Bowdoin even.
Following a scoreless first overtime, Amherst's Emily Little '13 (Sherborn, Mass.) dribbled into the box after a Jeff corner kick early in the second extra session before drawing a critical Bowdoin foul. Stepping up to take the ensuing penalty, Nathan calmly ripped a shot past a diving Maddie Lane '14 to give Amherst the win.
Allie Horwitz '12 (Woodbridge, Conn.) finished with four saves in the victory, while Lane made 11 stops in the loss.
The Lord Jeffs, who held a 23-10 shot advantage and 6-3 edge in corners, return to action on Saturday, Oct. 22 against Wesleyan.
