Little, Ingebritsen Break Through in 2-1 Win at ECSU

Box Score

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Emily Little '13 (Sherborn, Mass.) broke a 1-1 tie in the 77th minute and Ellen Ingebritsen '14 (Portola Valley, Calif.) recorded a pair of assists to lead the eighth-ranked Amherst College women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Eastern Connecticut State University Tuesday afternoon.

Amherst held a 1-0 lead at halftime thanks to a goal from Amanda Brisco '14 (Houston, Texas) in the 37th minute. The Warriors tied the game at 1-1 in the 60th minute before Little scored what held up as the game winner at 76:32.

The Lord Jeffs improved to 9-0-0 (6-0-0 NESCAC) and continued to build on the best start in program history, while the Warriors dropped to 6-7-0 (3-1-1 LEC) with their third consecutive loss. Tuesday's result turned the tables on the 2010 meeting that saw Eastern Connecticut earn a 2-1 win on Amherst's home field.

Amherst joins Trinity (Texas) and Johns Hopkins as the only Division III teams without a loss or tie this season. The Jeffs will travel to take on Colby College (4-4-1, 1-4-1 NESCAC) this Saturday at 11 a.m., followed by Sunday's 12:30 p.m. showdown in Bowdoin (3-3-3, 0-3-3 NESCAC). A single win this weekend will clinch Amherst a home quarterfinal game in the conference championship.

The visitors got on the board with exactly eight minutes remaining in the opening half when Brisco snuck a shot inside the left post for her third goal of the season. Brisco's goal was aided by a team-leading fifth assist for Kathryn Nathan '13 (Pembroke, Mass.) and the first collegiate point for Ingebritsen.

Eastern Connecticut tied things up at 59:05 when Daniela Marchitto beat Amherst goalkeeper Allie Horwitz '12 (Woodbridge, Conn.) from 18 yards out, marking the first second-half goal Amherst has allowed in 2011. Horwitz began the week leading all of Division III in save percentage (.971) but had to make only one save in Tuesday's game, as she has stopped 34 of the opposition's 36 shots on goal this year.

Ingebritsen had not recorded a point before Tuesday's game, but she picked up her second assist of the afternoon when she delivered a pass to Little in the box. The Amherst junior knocked the ball down, settled it at her feet and ripped a shot past goalkeeper Mackenzie Macleod for her first goal of the season with 13:28 to play.

Amherst held a 14-4 advantage in shots and a 10-2 edge in corners, as Macleod finished with five saves for the Warriors.
