PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – It was another close game between two evenly-matched women's hockey teams in the championship game of the 2011 Cardinal/Panther Classic. Amherst's Geneva Lloyd (Calgary, Alberta) scored a power-play goal at 16:27 of the second period, giving the Lord Jeffs a 1-0 victory over the Elmira College Soaring Eagles.
Lloyd's third of the year was unassisted and proved to be all the offense Amherst would need to claim the Cardinal/Panther Classic title.
Amherst held a slight edge in shots, 21-20. Elmira goaltender Lauren Sullivan made 20 saves. Caroline Hu (Cerritos, CA) also recorded 20 stops and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Nationally-ranked No. 5 Amherst improves to 4-3-2 on the year. Elmira, who is tied for sixth in the latest USCHO.com Division III women's hockey poll, falls to 9-4-1 overall.
