Box Score From a Bowdoin College release
BRUNSWICK, ME – The 20th-ranked Amherst College women's soccer team opened up the 2010 season this afternoon with a come-from-behind 2-1 win at Bowdoin College. The Lord Jeffs fell behind 1-0 in the 24th minute, but got a pair of second half goals to earn the victory.
In the 53rd minute, first-year Amanda Brisco (Houston, TX) scored an unassisted tally for her first collegiate points, tying the game at 1-1. With less than 15 minutes to play, senior Claire Galiette (Avon, CT) added her first collegiate score to put the Lord Jeffs on top 2-1 – the eventual final score.
The Polar Bears controlled the pace of play in the opening half and were rewarded when a run down the left side by Christina Aceto resulted in a loose ball in front of the cage. Bowdoin's Ellery Gould knocked home the loose ball to give Bowdoin a 1-0 lead that they would carry into intermission.
Brisco evened things for the Jeffs shortly after the break when Amherst controlled the ball following a corner kick. Bowdoin netminder Kat Flaherty appeared to get a piece of Brisco's shot, which trickled over the end line to tie the score up.
The Jeffs continued to turn up the pressure late in the game and were rewarded with Galiette's first career goal at 76:55 coming off a scramble in front of the goal.
Junior goalkeeper Allie Horwitz (Woodbridge, CT) played all 90:00 minutes in net for the Lord Jeffs, turning away 12 Bowdoin shots in the win. Flaherty surrendered both goals in net for the Polar Bears, making seven saves in the loss. Bowdoin held a 21-11 edge in shots in the game, with Horwitz's goalkeeping standing as a key in the result.
The Lord Jeffs will remain in Maine this evening, and take on NESCAC foe Bates College on the road tomorrow at 12 p.m.
