WATERVILLE, ME – Reigning NESCAC Player of the Week Jill Kochanek (Pittsburgh, PA) won a battle in front of the net that resembled a pinball game and her goal ended up being the game-winning score as the 15th-ranked Amherst College women's soccer team took a 2-0 win over Colby College in conference play Saturday.

After a corner kick, Colby tried to clear the ball off a wild scramble in front of the net. The Lord Jeffs banged the ball back in quickly after the Mules cleared it to about the  penalty shot mark and Kochanek and two Mules battled for the ball on the goal line. A Colby defender cleared the ball off the line and right into Kochanek, who hit it into another Colby player before it trickled into the net at 22:17 of the first half. It was Kochanek's third goal of the season.

Amherst (9-2 overall, 6-1 NESCAC) scored an insurance goal on another unusual tally when first-year Hannah Cooper (Bethesda, MD) hit a 20-yard shot that slammed off the crossbar and bounced back and hit diving Colby goalie Loni Pisani and went into the net with 15:17 left in the first half. Cooper's goal was her team-leading fifth of the season.

The Lord Jeffs had a 12-2 shot advantage in the opening half, but Colby (4-6-1, 1-5-1) did mount some offense in the second half and managed to out-shoot Amherst by an 8-7 margin in the final 45 minutes.

Sophomore Allie Horwitz (Woodbridge, CT) stopped five shots for the Lord Jeffs, while Pisani made 12 stops for the Mules. Amherst increased its winning streak to four games and its shutout streak to three, giving the Jeffs six shutouts on the season.
