WALTHAM, MA - The Amherst College softball team dropped game one of a doubleheader with Brandeis University, 9-1, but carried a lead into the bottom of the seventh inning in the nightcap. The host Judges were able to muster a comeback and hit two home runs in the seventh inning before the walk-off single, increasing their winning streak to 12 games.
Brandeis senior pitcher Kaitlin Streilein won the first game of the doubleheader surrendering only one run in claiming her 10th win of the season. She struck out four in a complete-game performance. She also came through with a two-run home run, her fifth of the season, in the fourth inning to give the team a comfortable lead.
Senior tri-captain Elizabeth Neckes (Dover, MA) went 2-for-2 with a single and a double in the first game, while first-year Jill Masi (Stamford, CT) was 1-for-2.
Amherst came out strong in the second game, scoring five runs in the first two innings, including a home run from Neckes, her second of the season.
Brandeis starting pitcher Allie Mussen was relieved after just one and one third innings of work by senior Natalie Volpe, who pitched the next four innings until Streilein was called in to finish the job.
With the Judges down by three runs entering the seventh inning, sophomore Chelsea Korp led off with a solo home run, her second of the season. A couple quick outs followed, but Streilein provided another home run, her second of the day and sixth of the season to drop the lead to just one run. Consecutive hits by first-years Danielle Lavallee and Junior Samantha Worth and a walk by sophomore Erin Ross set the stage for Volpe, who stepped up to hit the go-ahead single to win the game and continue the win streak to 12 games.
Sophomore Jackie Tyler (Ridgewood, NJ) led the Amherst offense with a 3-for-5 performance in the second game, adding a pair of runs scored. First-year Sam Presnal (Belchertown, MA) went 2-for-5 and scored a run, while Emily Neill (Kentfield, CA), Katie Kervick (Windsor Locks, CT), Maddie Tamagni (Salinas, CA), Holly Trace (Northport, AL) and Emily Bularzik (Braintree, MA) had one hit apiece.
Senior tri-captain Samantha Miller (Newton, MA) picked up the loss in game one to move to 2-3, while Tamagni (0-3) suffered a tough loss in the nightcap. Amherst falls to 8-12 with the pair of losses and will return to action Tuesday for a 5 p.m. game at Western New England College.
