TUCSON, AZ – The Amherst College softball team opened the second day of its Spring Break trip with a 6-4 loss to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point but was able to rebound with a 6-4 win over Buena Vista University in Monday's second game. Senior tri-captain Liz Neckes (Dover, MA) provided a walk-off home run to give the Lord Jeffs their first win of the season.
The Jeffs were led by sophomore Emily Neill (Kentfield, CA) on the day, as she went 2-for-3 in each game and provided a combined three RBIs. First-year Katie Kervick (Windsor Locks, CT) also went 2-for-3 against Stevens Point, with junior Maddie Tamagni (Salinas, CA) providing an RBI-triple in a 1-for-2 performance.
Sophomore Jackie Tyler (Ridgewood, NJ) returned from an injury to make her season debut against Buena Vista, scoring two runs to go along with a pair of hits. It was Neckes, however, that proved to be the hero for Amherst, as she belted a walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh to lead the Jeffs to their first victory of 2008.
Sophomore Alex Chang-Graham (San Carlos, CA) came in for relief and pitched the final six innings of the game, allowing just one run on four hits to earn her first win of the season.
