TUCSON, AZ – The Amherst College softball team kicked off its Spring Break trip with a 5-1 loss to Lakeland College and followed up with an 8-1 loss to Babson College in Sunday's nightcap. The Lord Jeffs could not get their offense going, as they were held to just two hits against the Beavers.
The Jeffs hung with Lakeland for most of the game and trailed just 2-1 heading into the fourth inning, but a three-run homer provided some cushion and Amherst could not catch up. Sophomore Emily Neill (Kentfield, CA) and junior Maddie Tamagni (Salinas, CA) each went 1-for-2 in the game, while sophomore Alex Chang-Graham (San Carlos, CA) and junior Holly Trace (Northport, AL) were each 1-for-3. Trace had an RBI-single to provide her team's lone run of the game.
Babson's second game of the day featured another magnificent pitching performance from senior Jess Byrn, who stifled Amherst in an 8-1 win. The senior righty allowed just one run on two hits, walked one and struck out 11 in seven innings of work as she improved to 2-0 on the year.
Byrn received plenty of offensive support, as the Beavers plated two runs in the first and six more in the second for an early 8-0 advantage. The Jeffs were, however, able to shut down the Beavers after the second inning, allowing no runs the rest of the way. Amherst's lone run off Byrn came in the top of the fourth, when junior Alexa Princi (London, England) led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout, and scored on a double by Trace.
Amherst returns to action on Monday, taking on Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Buena Vista University with the first game beginning at 8:30 a.m.
