WILLAMANTIC, CT – The Amherst College women's soccer team traveled to face Eastern Connecticut State University this evening after a tough opening weekend of action at The College of New Jersey. Ranked No. 4 in New England, Amherst outshot the Warriors by a 27-6 mark but was unable to beat Eastern keeper Megan Gloster, as the teams finished in a 0-0 stalemate.
Despite the Jeffs heading into the game with memories of a 1-0 win last season, 110 minutes of play would not separate the two sides, as Amherst moved to 0-1-2 on the year with the result.
Amherst held a sizable margin in time of possession, but had only a few legitimate scoring bids, the best coming with three seconds left in the first ten-minute sudden-death overtime session. On that play, first-year Claire Galiette (Avon, CT) sent a corner kick to the top of the box towards an unmarked Jillian Whiting (Clark, NJ). The sophomore midfielder hit a solid shot that sailed a foot over the crossbar as time expired in the session.
Gloster's best save came with ten minutes left in regulation, when she dove to her left to smother a 12-yard shot by sophomore Meg Murphy (Springfield, MA).
In the last meeting at Thomas Nevers Field in 2005, Amherst held a 15-3 advantage in shots but had to settle for a 1-1 tie that was stopped at the end of regulation due to darkness. Light was not an issue this evening, but Amherst was unable to steal the points on this day as well.
Amherst travels to face NESCAC rival Bates this Saturday when the two conference foes face off at 11 a.m.
