SANTA CRUZ, CA - Amherst College junior Josh Rilla (Westboro, MA/St. John's) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III men's tennis singles championships, hosted by the University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC), on Saturday with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Brandon Harris of Goucher College. However, Rilla fell there, suffering a 6-2, 6-2 loss to defending national champion Matt Seeberger of UCSC.
Rilla was one of six NESCAC players to make the field, and one of just four to escape the first round. Middlebury's Brian Waldron reached the quarterfinals, while Will Boe-Wiegaard of Bates College has advanced all the way to national championship match and will face Seeberger on Monday.
Amherst finished its season at 10-6, advancing all the way to the NCAA Regional Finals before falling to eventual national runner-up Middlebury.
