Neckes Leads Jeffs Past Brandeis, 3-2

April 16, 2005

AMHERST, MA - Rookie catcher Elizabeth Neckes (Dover, MA) singled home classmate Laura Smith (Long Branch, NJ) for the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead the Amherst College softball team (13-8-1) to a dramatic 3-2 non-league win over visiting Brandeis University (7-22) on Saturday.

Amherst junior hurler Miya Warner (Berkeley, CA) drew the start and pitched three shutout innings, left the mound in the fourth and then re-entered in the eighth to secure the victory, upping her record to 10-2.

Neckes, sophomores Annalise Rodli (La Canada, CA) and Caroline Polales (Winnetka, IL) and junior Rachel Hoerger (Oakland, CA) each had two hits for Amherst. Hoerger plated a run with an RBI single in the second inning.

First-year pitcher Natalie Volpe (Southington, CT) went the distance for Brandeis but took the loss to fall to 3-6. All three Amherst runs were unearned as the Judges committed six errors in defeat.

Amherst returns to action with a non-league game Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Trinity College.
