Jeffs Fall at Smith, 5-2

March 31, 2005

NORTHAMPTON, MA - The Amherst College softball team suffered its fourth straight loss on Thursday, falling at non-conference opponent Smith College, 5-2. Sophomore third baseman Caroline Polales (Winnetka, IL) doubled and scored a run as the Jeffs dropped to 6-6-1 with the loss, while Smith improved to 7-6.

Smith got on the board in the bottom of the first as sophomore Chloe Pete reached on a bunt single, swiped second base and then scored on double by junior Sara Watson. Watson crossed the plate just two batters later on a single by first-year Kate Schoenen. The Pioneers tacked on three runs in the sixth inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Smith senior Erica Hubbard was flawless entering the final inning, sitting down 18 straight Amherst batters, but sophomore shortstop Annalise Rodli (La Canada, CA) drew a walk to spoil the perfect game and Polales followed with a double to break up the no-hit bid as well. Fellow sophomore Laura Trigeiro (Reston, VA) plated Rodli on the ensuing at bat, and rookie Ralina Shaw (Tumwater, WA) slapped an RBI single to score Polales, but the Jeffs' rally would end there.

Amherst junior Miya Warner (Berkeley, CA) took the loss, surrendering seven hits and a trio of earned runs, while striking out five. Hubbard earned the win for Smith, allowing just two hits and a walk.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. against visiting NESCAC West Division foe Hamilton College.
