Jeffs Drop Doubleheader at WPI

FROM A WPI RELEASE

March 30, 2005

WORCESTER, MA - The Amherst College softball team dropped a doubleheader at non-conference foe WPI on Wednesday, suffering a narrow 2-1 hard-luck loss in the opener and falling 9-5 in the second game. The Jeffs fell to 6-5-1 with the losses, while WPI improved to 9-2.

Despite fanning 11 batters and giving up just four hits and one earned run, Amherst junior Miya Warner (Berkeley, CA) suffered her first loss of the season in the opener. WPI jumped on the scoreboard early as first-year Nicole DeCampo plated sophomore Meghan Kelly with an RBI single in the bottom of the first, and sophomore Kelly Head scored a second run in the bottom of the third on a single by Kelly. Amherst answered in the top of the fourth as first-year catcher Elizabeth Neckes (Dover, MA) eluded a run-down to pull the Jeffs within one, but they were unable to tie the game.

In Game 2, Amherst jumped out to a 3-0 edge in the top of the second as rookie Laura Smith (Long Branch, NJ) stroked an RBI single and later scored on an RBI double by sophomore hurler Hilary Little Kentfield, CA). Smith stretched the Jeffs' lead to four in the top of the sixth, knocking in fellow first-year Ralina Shaw (Tumwater, WA), but the Engineers rallied for nine runs in the bottom half of the inning to seal the win. DeCampo paced WPI in the second game with a double, a triple and three RBIs.

Amherst returns to action tomorrow (Thursday) at 4 p.m. at non-league opponent Smith College.
