Green, Levinson Power Amherst Bats in Doubleheader Sweep at Bates

May 2, 2004

LEWISTON, ME - Sophomore Andrew Green (Lexington, MA) had four hits and drove in a trio of runs in the opener, while classmate Dave Levinson (Philadelphia, PA) went 5-for-7 on the day, including a 4-for-4 outing in the finale, as the Amherst College baseball team swept a non-league doubleheader at Bates College on Sunday, winning 6-2 and 8-0.

Rookie hurler Nick Kehoe (Washington Depot, CT) tossed a complete-game three-hitter in Game 1, striking out five and allowing just two unearned runs while upping his pitching record to 2-1. Green, who's batting a cool .625 (10-for-16) with a team-high six RBIs since piercing the starting lineup for the first time on Friday, provided all the offense the Jeffs would need with an RBI single in the first inning and a two-run single in the fifth. Levinson drove in a run and scored another in the opener as well.

Sophomore fireballer Brant Ford (Fabius, NY) and rookie reliever Dan Schwartz (New York, NY) combined for a seven-inning shutout in the nightcap. Ford (2-1) scattered four hits (all singles) over six complete innings before Schwartz set the Bobcats down in order in the seventh. Levinson led the way offensively with four singles, driving in two runs and scoring a pair. Junior David Powers (Andover, MA) upped his current hitting streak to five games with a double, single, an RBI and a run scored. Scrappy senior Brandon Cody (Boston, MA) singled twice, drove in a run and scored another, while sophomore Zach Schonberger (Rye, NY) doubled and singled. Senior Paul Whiting (Mission Viejo, CA) and rookie Tom Scott (Randolph, NJ) added a pair of two-run singles, as the Jeffs improved to 16-15 overall. Bates finishes its season at 13-18.

Amherst has already clinched a berth in the four-team NESCAC Postseason Championship Tournament, where they'll face top-seeded host and defending conference champion Trinity College this Friday at 3 p.m. First the Jeffs will wrap up their regular-season slate with a non-league game against visiting Springfield College this Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
