AMHERST, MA - Seeing action for the first time in 10 days and playing its first home game of the season, the Amherst College baseball team scattered 10 hits and used four different pitchers en route to a 6-2 win over visiting non-league foe Westfield State College on Tuesday.
Senior starter Duncan Webb (Lynn, MA) and rookie Brian Donahue (Sudbury, MA) each pitched three scoreless innings for the Jeffs, now 7-7 on the season. Webb took the win, upping his record to 3-2. First-year Nick Kehoe (Washington Depot, CT) pitched the seventh and the eighth and recorded two outs in the ninth before giving way to junior reliever Ed Imperatore (Tenafly, NJ), who fanned Westfield leftfielder Matt Larabee (Cheshire, MA) to end the game.
Amherst drew first blood in the third inning when junior third baseman Josh Santry (Allendale, NJ) reached on a leadoff single and scored all the way from first on a one-hop double off the leftfield wall by senior second baseman Brandon Cody (Boston, MA). Cody then advanced to third on a wild pitch and trotted home on a sacrifice fly by senior rightfielder Matt Potter (Durham, NC).
Amherst added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, courtesy of an RBI single by Cody and a run-scoring fielder's choice by senior centerfielder Paul Whiting (Mission Viejo, CA), plating sophomore DH Rob Anderson (Winnetka, IL), who reached on a bloop single earlier in the inning.
The Jeffs tacked on another run in the fifth, as sophomore shortstop Zach Schonberger (Rye, NY) tripled to the left-centerfield gap and scored on a wild pitch. In the eighth, rookie catcher Jared Banner (Brooklyn, NY) made it a 6-0 game with an RBI double, scoring junior leftfielder David Powers (Andover, MA).
Westfield managed to stave off the shutout with a pair of runs in the ninth. Centerfielder Pat Ryan (Adams, MA) led off with a triple and scored on a groundout. Rightfielder Chris Visone (Windsor, CT) then walked and scored on a single by DH Shaun Geary (Mashpee, MA), before Imperatore came in and shut the door for Amherst.
Westfield used three pitchers in the game. Sophomore Joe DelSoldato (West Stockbridge, MA) drew the start, surrendering four earned runs in three complete innings. He took the loss to fall to 1-2.
Cody went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored to pace the Jeffs offensively. Ryan went 3-for-4 with a triple for Westfield (4-11).
Amherst returns to action tomorrow (Wednesday) at 3:30 p.m. against visiting sixth-ranked Eastern Connecticut State.
