Schonberger, Santry Key 12-Run Sixth Inning as Jeffs Clobber Keene St., 18-4

April 27, 2004

KEENE, NH - The Amherst College baseball team erupted for 12 runs in the top of the sixth inning en route to a one-sided 18-4 win at non-league foe Keene State College on Tuesday. The Jeffs pounded out 15 hits in the rout, including a pair of home runs by sophomore Zach Schonberger (Rye, NY) and a three-run shot by junior Josh Santry (Allendale, NJ), unleashing their most prolific offensive output since a 21-0 victory at Hamilton College last season.

Schonberger gave the Jeffs the early lead with a two-run shot in the second inning. Keene State's Justin Hickman (Mt. Vernon, NH) responded with a three-run blast off Amherst rookie starter Nick Kehoe (Washington Depot, CT) in the third, giving the Owls a short-lived 3-2 cushion. The lead changed hands again in the top of the fifth as Amherst went ahead 4-3 with a pair of unearned runs, courtesy of an error in the Keene St. infield. Keene St. then knotted the score 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth, as junior Mike Masseur (Warwick, RI) touched up Amherst reliever Brant Ford (Fabius, NY) for an RBI single.

That was all the offense the Owls would muster, however, and Amherst exploded for 12 runs (11 unearned) on 12 hits and three Keene St. errors in the top of the sixth. Schonberger added a solo home run - his second of the season and fifth of his career - during the inning, while Santry punctuated the barrage with his first round-tripper of the year, a three-run shot.

Schonberger and Santry each finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a trio of runs scored on the afternoon.

Ford (1-1) took the win, pitching three innings in relief before giving way to junior closer Ed Imperatore (Tenafly, NJ) in the eighth. Amherst improved to 12-13 overall, while Keene St. dropped to 12-15-1.

The Jeffs return to action Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at non-league foe Brandeis University.
