Jeffs Split Non-League Twinbill with Bowdoin

April 10, 2004

AMHERST, MA - Amherst College and visiting Bowdoin split a non-league baseball doubleheader on Saturday. Amherst (8-9) took the opener 6-5 as rookie starter Brian Donahue (Sudbury, MA) pitched into the ninth inning to improve his record to 3-0. Bowdoin (15-6) returned the favor with a 5-1 win in Game 2, courtesy of an eight-inning, six-hit pitching performance by sophomore starter Ricky LeClerc (Manchester, NH).

The Jeffs took advantage of six Bowdoin errors in Game 1 and jumped out in front early on a two-run double by senior catcher Tom Sullivan (Tewksbury, MA) in the bottom of the second inning. Senior second baseman Brandon Cody (Boston, MA) tacked on two more Amherst runs with an RBI single in the fourth and another in the sixth. Donahue took a shutout into the ninth but left two runners on base for junior reliever Ed Imperatore (Tenafly, NJ). Bowdoin took advantage with a trio of singles, cutting its deficit to 6-3. Amherst then called on sophomore hurler Joe Vladeck (Washington, DC), who gave up a two-run double to Bowdoin sophomore Jared Lemieux (Readfield, ME), but worked out of trouble to earn his second save of the season.

Donahue struck out four, walked four, scattered five Bowdoin hits and was credited with two earned runs. Sophomore Trevor Powers (Wells, ME) went the distance for Bowdoin but took the loss to fall to 3-1 despite allowing just two earned runs. Bowdoin senior Kevin Bougie (Sanford, ME), junior Tom McMahon (Weymouth, MA) and Lemieux each doubled and finished 2-for-5 in defeat.

In the nightcap, Bowdoin scored all five of its runs off Amherst starter Duncan Webb (Lynn, MA), who took the loss to drop to 3-3 before giving way to rookie hurler Nick Kehoe (Washington Depot, CT) and Vladeck. Senior John Clifford (Wayland, MA) did the bulk of the damage offensively, driving in a pair with a two-run double in the third and then trotting home on yet another double by McMahon. Senior T.J. McLeod (Gorham, ME) also singled in a run for Bowdoin, while Bougie finished 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles.

LeClerc upped his record to 5-0 with eight masterful innings, striking out six and allowing six Amherst hits. Bowdoin senior Travis Dube (Livermore Falls, ME) came on to pitch with a man on board in the ninth and retired the last three batters in order.

Junior leftfielder David Powers (Andover, MA) plated the lone Amherst run with an RBI single in the third.

Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at non-league foe Keene State.
