Jeffs Open NESCAC Play with Doubleheader Split at Wesleyan

March 27, 2004

MIDDLETOWN, CT - The Amherst College baseball team opened its NESCAC West Division slate with a doubleheader split at Little Three rival Wesleyan University on Saturday. Wesleyan won the seven-inning opener 2-0 behind a complete-game, three-hit pitching performance by junior Tom Bloss (Las Vegas, NV). Amherst (6-6/1-1 NESCAC) took the nine-inning nightcap 6-0, as rookie hurler Brian Donahue (Sudbury, MA) went the distance, scattering just three hits with five strikeouts. The Jeffs and Cardinals resume their three-game set tomorrow (Sunday) at 1 p.m. at Amherst.

In Game 1, Wesleyan (4-8-1/1-1 NESCAC) plated both runs in the third inning, thanks to a run-scoring fielder's choice by Angus Fredenburg (Concord, NH) and an RBI single by Alexander Brooks (Westport, CT). Both runs were unearned off Amherst starter Duncan Webb (Lynn, MA), who scattered just five hits but dropped to 2-2 with the complete-game loss. Amherst managed just five base runners against Bloss (1-1), three of them on singles by Dave Levinson (Philadelphia, PA), Rob Anderson (Winnetka, IL) and Paul Whiting (Mission Viejo, CA).

Amherst rebounded with 12 hits off two Wesleyan pitchers in Game 2. Wesleyan starter Eric Wdowiak (Nutley, NJ) surrendered 10 hits and all six Amherst runs (five earned) before giving way to Brian Mahr (Towaco, NJ) in the sixth. Junior third baseman Josh Santry (Allendale, NJ) paced the Jeffs offensively with a double, single, two RBIs and a run scored, while sophomore shortstop Zach Schonberger (Rye, NY) singled, doubled and scored a run. Whiting was also 3-for-5 with three singles. Levinson keyed a four-run rally in the fourth inning with a two-run double for Amherst.

Meanwhile, Donahue cruised, allowing only a double to Adam Kopiec (Rancho Santa Fe, CA) and a pair of singles to Brooks and Jason Vitko (Shelton, CT). Donahue remains undefeated at 2-0.
