FORT MYERS, FL - The Amherst College baseball team lost its second consecutive game, falling to UMass Boston, 9-1, in Fort Myers, Florida on Tuesday night. UMass Boston first-year pitcher Evan Tardugno hurled a complete game, allowing just one run on six hits as the Beacons moved to 3-3 on the season. The Jeffs dropped to 2-2 with the loss, but senior catcher Tom Sullivan (Tewksbury, MA) extended his early-season hitting streak to four games, going 1-for-2 with a double.
Amherst sophomore pitcher Brant Ford (Fabius, NY) took the loss as he went three innings, allowing seven hits, four walks and five earned runs. Fellow sophomore Rob Anderson (Winnetka, IL) came on in the fourth and allowed just one run in three innings while striking out two, and rookie Dan Schwartz (New York, NY) pitched two scoreless innings in his collegiate debut. Senior outfielder Kyle Lavery (Westbury, NY) knocked in the lone run for Amherst with a 1-for-4 showing at the plate.
Amherst returns to action Wednesday night at 7:00 against St. Lawrence University, also in Fort Myers. Senior Duncan Webb (Lynn, MA) seeks his second straight win on the hill for the Jeffs.
