MEDFORD, MA - The Amherst College women's soccer team fell 2-1 at 16th-ranked NESCAC rival Tufts University on Saturday. Junior forward Ashley Harmeling (North Reading, MA) prevented the shutout for the visiting Jeffs, who fell to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in conference play, with her second goal of the season.
With Tufts (2-0/1-0) maintaining possession at the outset, senior Jessica Trombly (Nashua, NH) gave the hosts an early 1-0 cushion in the 15th minute, lofting a shot over Amherst rookie keeper Jeanette Crowell (San Rafael, CA) from the top of the box. The Jumbos went on to post an 11-2 advantage in shots for the first half.
Tufts stretched its lead to 2-0 in the 69th minute. Junior Lindsey Wolejko (East Lyme, CT) started the play with a long ball that junior Becky Greenstein (Newton, MA) collected. Her cross to junior Jen Baldwin (Medway, MA) was perfect and Baldwin deposited the ball into the net for her second goal in as many games.
Amherst got the better of an aggressive play by Jumbo junior goalkeeper Meg McCourt (Rochester, NY) late in the second half for its lone goal. With two members of each team vying for a loose ball outside the box, it squirted free and Harmeling booted it into an open net to cut the margin to 2-1 with 1:07 remaining. Amherst gained possession in the final minute, but couldn't net the equalizer.
McCourt posted her 10th career shutout with three saves in the Tufts net. Crowell made four stops for Amherst, all in the first half.
Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at non-league foe Eastern Connecticut State.
