Jeffs Remain Undefeated in Conference Play with Doubleheader Sweep Over Wesleyan

April 10, 2003

AMHERST, MA - Rookie hurler Miya Warner (Berkeley, CA) tossed a pair of complete game victories, including a two-hit shutout in the opener, as the Amherst College softball team improved to 4-0 in NESCAC West Division play and 10-6 overall with a doubleheader sweep over visiting Little Three rival Wesleyan University on Thursday, winning the first game 3-0 and the nightcap 7-2.

Warner upped her pitching record to 10-3 and took a perfect game into the sixth inning in Game 1 before surrendering an opposite field bloop single to Wesleyan pitcher Lindsay Wasserman (Branford, CT). Wesleyan finally moved a runner into scoring position in the seventh, thanks to a leadoff double by center fielder Diana Garcia (Canoga Park, CA). Garcia was left stranded, however, as Warner cemented the shutout with a strikeout and a pop fly.

Amherst broke the ice in the first inning on an RBI single by senior second baseman Emily Melia (Hingham, MA). First-year first baseman Laura Trigeiro (Reston, VA) then plated classmate Rachel Hoerger (Oakland, CA) with an RBI single in the third, and later scored on a throwing error.

Amherst rookie catcher Kate Raddock (Stamford, CT) went 3-for-3 with a trio of singles to pace the offense. Warner finished with eight strikeouts and no walks. Wasserman went the distance for Wesleyan but took the loss to fall to 3-11.

The Jeffs pounded out 11 hits in the nightcap and broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning. Trigeiro ignited the barrage with an RBI double. Senior DP Tamara Baer (Amherst, NY) added a pair of insurance runs with a two-run single, scoring Melia and Raddock. Junior Jess Allen (Chagrin Falls, OH), Trigeiro, Raddock and Melia each finished with two hits in the game.

Warner scattered six hits and struck out five en route to her eighth straight win. Starting pitcher Jenn Wasserman (Branford, CT) paced Wesleyan with a pair of singles, an RBI and a run scored. She also surrendered three earned runs in 4.1 innings and fell to 3-3 with the loss. Wesleyan dropped to 6-14 overall and 0-2 in divisional play.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at noon, with a non-league twinbill against visiting Trinity College.
