Jeffs Sweep NESCAC Twinbill Against Hamilton

March 29, 2003 

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College softball team improved to 7-6 overall and 2-0 in conference play with a pair of victories over visiting NESCAC West Division foe Hamilton College Saturday at Hill Field. In the opener, rookie hurler Miya Warner (Berkeley, CA) tossed a complete-game, three-hit shutout to lead the Jeffs to a 1-0 victory. Amherst first-year outfielder Rachel Hoerger (Oakland, CA) went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored as the Jeffs notched their second win of the day, 4-1. 

In Game 1, rookie catcher Kate Raddock (Stamford, CT) singled up the middle to lead off the fourth inning. Shortly thereafter, she scored the game's lone run when senior second basemen Emily Melia (Hingham, MA) smacked a sacrifice fly into left field. 

Amherst jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in Game 2 when Hoerger scored on a wild pitch after reaching with a single. The Jeffs extended the advantage to 4-0 in the fifth when Hoerger crossed home plate on a passed ball. The Continentals tallied their only run of the afternoon in the top of the seventh when rookie infielder Meghan Hover (Belle Mead, NJ) singled, scoring senior first baseman Stephanie Dunn (Ithaca, NY). 

With the pair of losses, Hamilton dropped to 3-9 overall and 0-3 in league play. Amherst returns to action Monday at 3:30 p.m. for a non-conference doubleheader at Smith College.
