FORT MYERS, FL - Amherst first-year Miya Warner (Berkeley, CA) is one of the hardest working women in college softball. The rookie hurler pitched a complete-game 5-2 loss to Worcester State College on Thursday, and then tossed four innings of one-hit relief in a 14-7 win over St. Lawrence University shortly thereafter. Both games were played in Fort Myers, Florida.
Warner allowed just three hits and struck out 12 against Worcester State, but Amherst committed five errors with several players playing out of position due to an injury in the middle infield. The Jeffs swung the bat well in the loss. First-year Rachel Hoerger (Oakland, CA), senior Emily Melia (Hingham, MA) and Warner each had two hits.
Amherst trailed 7-0 in the nightcap but rebounded with 14 runs in the last five innings. Warner, who struck out six, was near perfect in relief of Melia. Rookie Laura Trigeiro (Reston, VA) continued her hot hitting with a single, triple and her first collegiate round-tripper. Fellow first-year Kate Raddock (Stamford, CT) added a three-run double. Melia finished 1-for-3 with an RBI triple.
Warner's pitching record is now 3-3. The Jeffs are 3-5 overall.
Amherst will wrap up its Florida trip on Friday with an 11 a.m. game against Fontbonne, followed by a 6 p.m. matchup with Southern Maine.
