BRUNSWICK, ME - The second-seeded Amherst women's soccer team defeated third-seeded Williams College on penalty kicks after a 1-1 double-overtime tie in the NESCAC Postseason Tournament Semifinals, hosted by Bowdoin College Saturday. Amherst junior Ashley Harmeling (N. Reading, MA) netted her 15th goal of the year in the Jeffs' second-consecutive penalty kick win. The Jeffs will face fourth-seeded Bates College in the NESCAC Championship game, held at Bowdoin Sunday at Noon, with an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament at stake.
After a scoreless first period, Harmeling gave the Jeffs a 1-0 advantage in the 69th minute, when she beat Williams first-year goalkeeper Sarah Ginsburg just inside the right post. However, the Ephs answered as senior Hannah Stauffer lobbed a ball over the head of Amherst first-year Jeanette Crowell (San Rafael, CA) to even the score 1-1 and force overtime. After two stalemate extra periods, the game moved to penalty kicks to decide a victor. Harmeling, sophomore Sarah Coleman (New Haven, CT) and senior tri-captain Jenny Rossman (Newton, MA) all netted penalty kicks for the Jeffs, while Crowell, who collected eight saves in regulation, denied three of the four Williams shooters she faced, and Amherst moved to 9-3-4 on the year.
Ginsburg and junior Lindsay Starner split time in net for the Ephs, collecting six and two saves, respectively.
