AMHERST, MA - After suffering a stunning upset loss to NESCAC foe Tufts University on Saturday the Amherst College women's soccer team dropped another heartbreaker to visiting non-league foe Eastern Connecticut State University on Wednesday. Sophomore phenom Jen Ferrari (Coventry, RI) notched the game-winning goal 8:32 into overtime to set the final score at 1-0.
The Warriors dominated much of the first half but were unable to find the net while Amherst controlled the majority of the second stanza. The Jeffs had multiple opportunities to jump ahead. Junior Jenny Rossman (Newton Highlands, MA) fired a sharp-angled shot that sailed over the crossbar in the 53rd minute and sophomore striker Tracy Montigny (East Granby, CT) dribbled past a pair of defenders and ripped a right-footed shot that was snagged by Warrior goalkeeper Stacey Schofield (Woodstock, CT) in the 76th minute. Amherst first-year goalie Lauren Coape-Arnold (Scarsdale, NY) was stellar in her collegiate debut, recording six saves including a breakaway stop on Ferrari late in regulation.
Both teams were feisty in overtime as a pair of yellow cards were dished out. Ferrari iced the contest with 1:28 remaining in the extra period, sprinting around a Jeff defender to gather the ball and shoot a left-footed rocket from the top corner of the box into the bottom corner of the net. With the loss, Amherst falls to 2-2 overall while Eastern Connecticut improves to 5-1.
The Jeffs return to action Saturday at 11 a.m. against visiting NESCAC rival Bates College.
