HARTFORD, CT - The Amherst College softball team swept a doubleheader at NESCAC East Division foe Trinity College on Saturday afternoon. The Jeffs took the opener tallying the game-winning run off a wild pitch by Bantam hurler Kate Hunter in extra innings. In the second game, the visitors received a strong pitching performance from junior Emily Melia (Hingham, MA), allowing just a pair of runs, as the Jeffs edged the hosts, 3-2.
Senior pitcher Lauren Peloquin (Berkley, MA) improved to 13-5, tossing a complete-game, while striking out nine Bantam batters. Each team tallied a run in the eighth inning to send the contest into yet another extra session. The Jeffs tallied a trio of runs in the top of the ninth - all of which were unearned - and Trinity countered with a pair in the bottom half of the frame, but came up just short.
In the second game, sophomore Gina Scribner (Star, ID) came up to bat with the bases juiced in the top of the third inning. She then cleared the bases with a double to center field for the Jeffs only runs of the game. Melia went five innings and Peloquin came on in relief to earn her third save of the season.
With the pair of victories, Amherst improves to 16-8 overall, while Trinity drops to 6-20.
The Jeffs return to action on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Tufts University.
