Jeffs Split Doubleheader at Westfield

WESTFIELD, MA - The Amherst College softball team split at doubleheader against non-league foe Westfield State College on Wednesday afternoon. The Jeffs held on to win the first game, 5-4, while Westfield took the nightcap in five innings, 9-1. 

Amherst belted 12 hits in the opener. Junior Emily Melia (Hingham, MA) finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and a two-run triple in the first inning. Sophomore Gina Scribner (Star, ID) and junior Missy Mordy (Sammamish, WA) each pounded out a single and a double, respectively, to start the sixth inning while junior outfielder Erin Dittus (Brentwood, TN) knocked in an RBI-double to put the Jeffs ahead for good, 5-3. 

With the victory, senior hurler Lauren Peloquin (Berkley, MA) improved to 12-5, while Sarah Simons took the loss and fell to 5-6. 

In the nightcap, the Owls received a strong pitching performance from senior Sarah Kalager, striking out five while allowing four hits and one earned run. Westfield junior first baseman Kate Pomerleau snapped a scoreless tie in the fourth inning by blasting a three-run triple into the right-center field gap. She later knocked in an RBI-single in the fifth inning. Sophomore Jessica Allen (Chagrin Falls, OH) knocked in the only run for the Jeffs on an RBI single in the fifth inning. 

With the split, Amherst moves to 14-8 overall, while Westfield goes to 16-12-1. The Jeffs return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader at NESCAC West Division foe Trinity College.
