LEWISTON, ME - In the first meeting between the two teams since an ECAC tournament game in 1982, the Bates and Amherst College baseball teams split a NESCAC inter-divisional doubleheader. The Lord Jeffs (11-12) won the opener, 3-0, before the Bobcat (5-7-1) bats woke up to take the second game, 7-6.
In game one, Amherst senior RHP Jeff Leduc (Pittsfield, Mass.) threw a complete- game four hit shutout. He struck out five and walked just one for the Lord Jeffs' first complete-game shutout of the season. Bates first-year RHP Mike Kinsman (Yarmouth, Maine) also threw a complete game in the losing effort. He allowed six hits and three earned runs, striking out six and walking none. Amherst scored two in the second inning on an RBI single by senior 2B John Brody (Baltimore Md.) and a ground out from senior 1B Jim Hochrein (Greenfield, Mass.). They added another run in the fifth on rookie SS Josh Santry's (Allendale, N.J.) solo home run.
In the nightcap, Bates senior C Ben Donaldson (Lamoine, Maine) went 2-3 with two RBI, three runs scored, a double and a solo HR in the fourth inning, reaching base four of five plate appearances. Sophomore SS Nate Maxwell (Newport, Vt.) went 2-5 with two RBI, including a key insurance run in the sixth inning. Bates starter Ryan Weaver (Canton, Ohio) picked up the win on the mound, while rookie hurler John Furbush (So. Portland, Maine) retired six of the seven batters he faced to record his first career save. Five Amherst batters had multi-hit games including junior C Joe Katuska (Southboro, Mass.) who went 2-4 with a home run and Santry, who was 2-4 with two RBI, a run scored and a walk.
Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 3 p.m. at non-league foe Keene State College.
