Jeffs Down Visiting Wheaton, 18-4

March 28, 2002

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College men's lacrosse team downed visiting non-league foe Wheaton College, 18-4, in their home-opener Thursday afternoon at Hitchcock Field. The Jeffs, ranked eighth in New England, used a balanced offensive attack as 12 different players pierced the scoring column. Junior attackman Chris Condlin (Baltimore, MD) paced the hosts with four goals and a pair of assists, while first-year attackman Alex Casertano (Millbrook, NY) chipped in with a goal and five assists. With the victory, Amherst improves to 3-1 overall while Wheaton drops to 2-2.

The Jeffs roared past the visiting Lyons with nine first quarter goals. Senior quad-captain Gene Nogi (Clarks Summitt, PA) ignited the barrage less than a minute into the contest, bouncing a shot through sophomore goaltender Bryant Denny's (Fair Haven, NJ) legs. Wheaton quickly countered when sophomore midfielder Chris Milligan (Madison, CT) gathered a rebound off Amherst goalie Cushing Donelan's (Noroton, CT) shoulder and found the back of the net. Condlin tallied three of Amherst's next eight goals, giving the hosts a 9-1 advantage to end the opening quarter.

First-year midfielder Joaquin Walker (Denver, CO) tallied both Amherst strikes in the second period. He fired a sharp-angled shot into the lower portion of the net early in the period. Shortly thereafter, he dodged past a Lyon defender and buried his second goal of the game, ripping a shot into the top right corner. Wheaton sophomore midfielder Scott Liston (Plainfield, NH) answered late in the period to cut the lead to 11-2, heading into halftime.

Eight different Amherst players registered goals in the second half to round out the scoring. Donelan finished with nine saves for the Jeffs and senior Jay Garvey (Watertown, NY) played the final quarter and recorded four saves. Denny played the entire game for the visitors en route to an 11-save performance.

Amherst returns to action and opens its NESCAC slate Saturday at 1 p.m. against visiting Colby College.
