Softball Downs So. Maine, Framingham

March 21, 2002

FORT MYERS, FL – The Amherst College softball team upped its record to 5-3 with wins over the University of Southern Maine and Framingham State College Thursday in Fort Myers, Florida. Senior hurler Lauren Peloquin (Berkley, MA) rebounded from a knee laceration to toss a pair of complete-game victories, while junior outfielder Tamara Baer (Amherst, NY) drove in the game-winning run in the opener and added two hits in the nightcap.

Game-one – a 2-1 win over Southern Maine – was a nailbiter until Baer set the final score with a go-ahead sacrifice fly. Peloquin surrendered just six hits and struck out seven, while sophomore second baseman Emily Melia (Hingham, MA) finished 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Amherst then pounded out 11 hits to edge Framingham St., 5-4, shortly thereafter. Five players registered multiple-hit games for the Jeffs, including Melia and junior shortstop Missy Mordy (Sammamish, WA), who each went 2-for-4 with an RBI-single. Sophomore first baseman Gina Scribner (Star, ID) also had two hits and drove in a run, while sophomore Jessica Allen (Chagrin Falls, OH) added a two-run double and junior outfielder Erin Dittus (Brentwood, TN) went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Peloquin struck out nine Framingham batters for her second win of the afternoon, improving her pitching record to 5-1. Her lone defeat came in a 2-1 extra-inning heartbreaker in the Jeffs' season-opener against Babson, in which she tallied a season-high 13 strikeouts.

Amherst will play its last game in Fort Myers on Friday, taking on Plymouth State College at 9 a.m.
