Jeffs Down Bowdoin, Fall to St. Lawrence

March 18, 2002

FORT MYERS, FL - The Amherst College softball team continued its spring swing in Fort Myers, Florida on Monday with a 6-5 non-league win over NESCAC-rival Bowdoin College and a 6-1 loss to St. Lawrence University.

Senior hurler Lauren Peloquin (Berkley, MA) tossed her second complete game in as many days to earn the win in the opener, evening her record at 1-1. The Jeffs scored all six of their runs in the opening frame as Peloquin, sophomore first baseman Gina Scribner (Star, ID), senior catcher Becca Binder (Scarsdale, NY) and sophomore second baseman Emily Melia (Hingham, MA) put together a string of base hits to spark the rally. Scribner finished the game 2-for-4 with a double.

St. Lawrence proved to be a tougher challenge as Amherst managed just one run in the nightcap. The Jeffs' only offense came in the third inning when sophomore third baseman Jess Allen (Chagrin Falls, OH) doubled and scored on a base hit by Scribner. St. Lawrence scored five of its six runs in the first two innings to cruise to the victory. Melia went the distance for Amherst, but took the loss to fall to 0-1.

Amherst (1-2) returns to action Tuesday at 9 a.m. against Lasell College, followed by an 11 a.m. tilt against Dickinson College. Both games will take place in Fort Myers.
