Jeffs Split Twinbill With UMass-Boston

March 17, 2002

FORT MYERS, FL - After opening its season with a 5-4 win over third-ranked and previously-unbeaten Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday, the Amherst College baseball team split with UMass-Boston on Sunday, winning the first game, 4-0, before dropping the second, 10-7.

Junior starter Johah Ansell (Oak Park, IL) was stellar in the Jeffs' 4-0 win, scattering just two hits with nine strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Junior southpaw Chris Vecsey (Madison, NY) came on for the save in the seventh and final inning, striking out the only batter he faced.

Amherst pounded out 11 hits in the game-one victory, led by sophomore third baseman Matt Potter's (Durham, NC) two hits and three RBI's. Potter also drove in three runs in Saturday's win over Ohio Wesleyan. Senior second baseman John Brody (Baltimore, MD) continued his hot hitting with two hits and a pair of runs scored, while first-year shortstop Josh Santry (Allendale, NJ) added three hits.

It looked like Amherst would breeze through the nightcap as well. The Jeffs scored six runs in the first inning and led 7-1 at one point, but couldn't hold the lead, due in large part to five errors. Sophomore right-hander Andy Kerns (Barrington, IL) drew the start but lasted only 3.2 innings, allowing eight hits, two walks and three earned runs en route to a no decision. Vecsey took the loss in relief.

First-year right fielder David Powers (Andover, MA) finished 2-for-4 and scored two runs in the loss, while senior Jim Hochrein (Greenfield, MA) and juniors Devin Haran (Basking Ridge, NJ) and Joe Katuska (Southboro, MA) added two hits apiece.

Amherst, now 2-1 on the season, returns to action Monday at noon against Johns Hopkins University, a 2001 NCAA Tournament participant.
