AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women's soccer team exerted some strong offensive pressure in Saturday's game with conference foe Bowdoin College, but came away empty-handed with a 0-0 double-overtime tie, dropping the Jeffs to 4-2-1 overall and 3-1-1 in NESCAC play.
Midfield play was dominant throughout the match as neither team asserted itself. However, the two 15-minute overtime periods were dominated by Amherst who couldn't convert on repeated scoring chances.
In the first overtime slate, a shot from first-year striker Adrienne Showler (Ottawa, Ontario) skipped across the goal line before being kicked away. In the second overtime, senior tri-captain Cathy Poor (Harwich Port, MA) just missed the net on a header with 11 minutes remaining, then blasted a shot on goal before Bowdoin's Emily Rizza (Pennington, NJ) made a nice save.
Rizza finished with five saves in the 120 minute marathon, while Amherst goalie Hallison Putnam (Lexington, KY) made 10 saves. Amherst completes a week where it went 0-2-1, including losses to Trinity and Springfield, while Bowdoin's record falls to 3-2-1 overall and 1-2-1 in NESCAC play.
Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 4 p.m. against visiting non-league opponent Mass. College.
