April 7, 2001

WORCESTER, MA - Sophomore Amherst College hurler Emily Melia (Hingham, MA) threw just 60 pitches en route to a complete-game one-hit shutout, as the Jeffs pounded host Worcester Polytechnic Institute 7-0 on Saturday, improving to 11-4 overall with their fifth straight win. W.P.I. fell to 2-10 with the loss.

Amherst put the game away early with five runs in the first two innings, keyed by a double and an RBI triple by senior co-captain Carline Kelly (So. Dartmouth, MA). First-year first baseman Gina Scribner (Star, ID) also plated a pair of runs with a single and a double, while sophomore outfielders Erin Dittus (Brentwood, TN) and Tamara Baer (Amherst, NY) each added RBI singles.

Other Amherst offensive standouts included junior Lauren Peloquin (Berkley, MA), who went one-for-three with her first triple of the season, and sophomore Jenna Obelsky (Stoughton, MA), who came through with a pinch-hit double in the fifth.

The only hit for W.P.I. came as a single from freshman catcher Sara Ibbitson (Middleboro, MA), as Melia notched her first shutout of the season to improve her pitching record to 3-4. Meanwhile, W.P.I. hurler Jennifer Flynn (Springfield, MA) took the loss to fall to 0-4.

Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 4 p.m. against visiting Brandeis University.
