FORT MYERS, FL - Junior Amherst College starter Lauren Peloquin (Berkeley, MA) tossed her second straight one-hit shutout and drove in a run with a first-inning RBI single as the Jeffs' softball team downed Framingham State 3-0 in the first of two non-league games on Wednesday. Amherst also fell to U-Mass Dartmouth, 4-1, later that afternoon.
The Jeffs pounded out 10 hits in the opener, including Peloquin's run-scoring single and an RBI double by senior co-captain Meg Nelson (Middletown, CT). Sophomore outfielder Tamara Baer (Amherst, NY) plated the third and final Amherst run with an RBI triple in the sixth inning, while sophomore outfielder Erin Dittus (Brentwood, TN) and senior second baseman Carline Kelly (S. Dartmouth, MA) each added a pair of singles.
Meanwhile, Peloquin finished with 13 strikeouts, improving her record to 3-0 with a trio of complete-game shutouts. She has surrendered just six base hits thus far this season.
Amherst's bats fell silent in the nightcap as an RBI double by Peloquin was all the offense the Jeffs would muster in a 4-1 loss to U-Mass Dartmouth. Nelson scored Amherst's lone run and went two for three with a pair of singles. Sophomore hurler Emily Melia (Hingham, MA) went the distance for the Jeffs, but allowed four runs on six hits to fall to 1-2 overall.
Amherst, now 4-2 during its 10-game Florida swing, returns to action Thursday against Plymouth State and St. Ambrose, also in Fort Myers.
