FORT MYERS, FL - Amherst College junior right-hander Lauren Peloquin (Berkeley, MA) tossed a one-hit shutout as the Jeffs remained unbeaten in conference play with a 3-0 win over NESCAC rival Bowdoin College in the first of two games in Fort Myers, Florida on Tuesday. Amherst then blew a 2-0 lead against non-league foe Pine Manor College in a 3-2 loss later in the afternoon.
Peloquin took a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh inning before allowing a one-out bloop single to junior center fielder Katie Sheridan in the opener. She also torched Bowdoin for eight strikeouts and allowed just one baserunner along the way, improving to 2-0 on the season. Senior co-captain Meg Nelson (Middletown, CT) paced the Amherst offense with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Fellow senior co-captain Carline Kelly (S. Dartmouth, MA) also went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.
Meanwhile, the Jeffs took an early 2-0 lead in the nightcap but surrendered three runs in the fifth inning against Pine Manor. Nelson once again led the Jeffs with a single and an RBI-double, while Kelly added another two singles. Amherst starter Emily Melia (Hingham, MA) went the distance, but scattered eight hits and took the loss to fall to 1-1.
The Jeffs (3-1/3-0 NESCAC) return to action Wednesday morning against Framingham State College at 9:00 and The University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth at 11:00, in a pair of games originally scheduled for Monday but postponed due to inclement weather.
