BRUNSWICK, Maine Amherst College first-year Jenny Rossman (Newton, MA) netted her first collegiate goal at the 14:27 mark to equalize Saturday's NESCAC showdown between the Jeffs and host Bowdoin College at one, before the two teams played 105 more minutes of scoreless soccer, finishing with a 1-1 tie in double overtime.
After Bowdoin midfielder Shellie Chessie converted a header of an Alison Lavoie corner kick at 11:01 to give the Polar Bears a 1-0 lead, the Jeffs struck right back, with Rossman netting her first career tally off a feed from Porco, making her first career start as a striker.
From there, the game bogged down into a battle in the midfield, with neither team able to muster much in the way of scoring opportunities. The Jeffs managed only seven shots on goal during regulation, while Bowdoin managed only nine. In overtime, the two teams each had a couple of scoring chances, but Amherst goalie Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, MA) and her counterpart, Bowdoin keeper Sarah Farmer, were up to task, preserving the 1-1 tie.
Amherst junior Cathy Poor (Harwich Port, MA) paced the Jeffs with three shots on goal, but fell short in her bid to become the first Jeff ever to score in four consecutive games.
The tie bodes well for the Jeffs (4-2-1, 3-1-1 NESCAC), who still have the toughest part of their NESCAC schedule ahead, beginning with next Saturday's showdown at Middlebury College. The Polar Bears, who had climbed to 17th in the nation and third in New England on the strength of 1-0 overtime win over Middlebury, move to 5-1-1 (2-1-1 NESCAC) for the season, snapping Amherst's five-game winning streak in the series between the NESCAC rivals.
The Jeffs, who are next in action on Wednesday afternoon at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams, have a 7-2-1 lead over Bowdoin in the all-time series.
