AMHERST, MA - In a game that would determine the final entrant into the 2000 NESCAC Championship Tournament, Amherst College blanked visiting Trinity 3-0 in men's soccer, effectively extending its season and eliminating the Bantams from conference post-season consideration.
Amherst drew first blood on a freak-play 23 minutes into the first half when first-year phenom Bradford Coffey (Yarmouth, ME) deflected a throw-in off Trinity goalkeeper Michael Doherty (Marshfield, MA) into the Bantam net for the first goal of the game. It was also the first goal of Coffey's career.
The Jeffs then extended the lead to 2-0 when newcomer Franklin Perry (Hartford, CT) scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season on an unassisted breakaway in the 60th minute. With under a minute remaining in regulation, senior Charles Franklin (Avon, CT) iced the game with a right-footed blast off a free kick to set the final score at 3-0.
Junior keeper Bill Orum (Greenwich, CT) was exceptional in goal for the Jeffs, logging a game-high six saves for his fifth shutout of the season. Doherty finished with two saves, as the Bantams fell to 5-6-3 overall and 2-6-1 in the NESCAC.
With the win, Amherst improved to 4-5 in conference play (7-5-2 overall) and claimed one of seven spots in the upcoming inaugural NESCAC Men's Soccer Championship. As the fifth seed, Amherst is tentatively slated to travel to fourth seed Tufts University for a quarterfinal matchup against the Jumbos on Tuesday, with the semifinal and championship games set for Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 4-5 at top-seed Williams College, the number one team in the nation.
