Putnam, Rossman Lead Amherst Over Mt. Holyoke 4-0

AMHERST, Mass. - Junior striker/midfielder Hallison Putnam (Lexington, KY) and first-year midfielder Jenny Rossman (Newton, MA) each scored a goal and assisted on two others as Amherst College improved to 8-4-1 with a 4-0 victory over visiting non-league foe Mount Holyoke College on Thursday.

Putnam, named the NESCAC Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 16, gave the Jeffs a 1-0 lead on a left footed shot off a corner kick pass from Rossman in the 10th minute. She now has goals in three consecutive games, including a pair of game-winners in 1-0 victories over Williams College and Eastern Connecticut State, despite playing just her fifth career game in the Amherst midfield. The goal came off Rossman's sixth corner kick assist of the season and seventh assist overall.

Senior striker Alexa Faigen (Lawrenceville, NJ) extended the lead at 22:46 with an unassisted blast that deflected off Mount Holyoke defender Kate Porter, just beyond the reach of goalkeeper Kristen Van de Geer.

Amherst continued to pour it on after the break, as junior Margaret Rubin (McLean, VA) notched her first goal of the season off another corner kick from Rossman, deflected into the box by Putnam in front of a wide-open net.

Rossman then iced the game in the 79th minute with her third goal of the season, as Putnam sent a centering pass to senior midfielder Meg Riley (Wellesley, MA), who found Rossman at the top of the box for a right-footed blast in traffic.

Amherst goalie Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, MA) recorded her eighth shutout of the season and 19th of her career as the Jeffs outshot Mount Holyoke 42-1. Van de Geer had 13 saves in defeat, as the Lyons fell to 2-12 on the season.

The Jeffs already clinched a spot in the seven-team NESCAC tournament with a 1-0 win over Williams on Saturday. Amherst concludes its regular-season slate this Saturday at NESCAC rival Wesleyan University at 2 p.m. in a game that will decide the 2000 Little III Championship.
