AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore goalkeeper Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, MA) turned away four shots for her sixth shutout of the season and 15th of her career, as the Amherst College Lord Jeffs blanked non-conference foe Eastern Connecticut State University 1-0 on Thursday. Amherst improved to 6-4-1 on the season, with all six wins coming by way of shutout.
Junior midfielder Hallison Putnam (Lexington, KY) scored the game's lone goal on a left footed smash from the top of box, her first of the season, after a nifty feed from first-year phenom Jenny Rossman (Newton, MA) in the 31st minute. Putnam, normally a striker, started just her third career game in the Amherst midfield in place of injured classmate Cathy Poor (Harwich Port, MA), the Jeffs' leading scorer on the season with nine goals. Rossman now has a team-high six assists on the season, four of which have come on corner kicks to Poor.
ECSU goalie Samly Phonesavanh (Killingly, CT) turned away 10 shots in defeat, as the Warriors, ranked 10th in the latest NSCAA New England Region Poll, fell to 7-3
Amherst returns to Hitchcock Field this Saturday for an 11 a.m. matchup against NESCAC rival Williams College, the first of two remaining games on the Jeffs' 2000 conference slate. Amherst can ensure a spot in NESCAC post-season play with a win or tie against Williams or a similar result at Wesleyan College on Tuesday, Oct. 21. Victories over Williams and Wesleyan would ensure a home playoff game for Amherst.
