Hickerson, Permut Named Academic All-District

AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Ellie Hickerson (Davenport, IA) and Irene Permut (Wilmington, DE) were named to the 1997-98 GTE/CoSIDA Fall/Winter Women's At-Large College Division Academic All-District I Team. The pair were selected from 71 nominees in the sports of cross country, fencing, field hockey, gymnastics, rifle, skiing, soccer and swimming from non-Division I schools in New England and eastern Canada. As a member of the First Team, Hickerson qualifies for national recognition, to be announced April 23.

Hickerson, a senior back on the women's soccer team, led Amherst to four straight NCAA appearances, including a 1998 National Quarterfinal finish and a trip to the 1997 Final Four. The tri-captain's tenacious defense held opponents to a total of 42 goals in her career, and she was named to the First Team All-America after three years as an All-New England defender. Tallying a goal and eight assists as a senior, the American Studies major led the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) in assists and finished her career with a goal and 10 assists. Currently writing a senior honors thesis in American Studies on the images of women during World War II, Hickerson boasts a 3.65 cumulative average and has been recognized as a 1997 NSCAA Second Team Scholar All-American. She will graduate with a 51-9-6 career record as part of the winningest class of women's soccer class at Amherst College.

Permut, a junior midfielder for the field hockey team, earned Second Team honors with a 3.69 average as a Psychology major. The tri-captain is a two-time All-American and was named to both the 1997 NFHCA and NESCAC All-Academic Squads. As a three-year starter, Permut helped lead the 1997 team to a 10-5 record and their third straight post-season appearance, and she is currently a starting midfielder for the defending ECAC Championship women's lacrosse team. Off the field, Permut serves as a diversity educator at Amherst College and volunteers at Head Start after being accepted to the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in the humanities and medicine program as a sophomore.
